We’re thrilled to announce that the 5th Annual National Walking Day, hosted by Get Ireland Walking, will take place on Sunday, September 29th, 2024. This event is part of the European Week of Sport, and it’s all about celebrating the power of walking and the incredible efforts of community walking volunteers across Ireland.
National Walking Day has become a highlight of the year for many communities, and this year promises to be better than ever. The event is designed to promote walking as an accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable way to stay active and connect with others. National Walking Day is the perfect opportunity to lace up your shoes and join in the fun.

Wicklow is gearing up for a fantastic celebration with four community walks hosted by Active Wicklow and Healthy Wicklow across Baltinglas, Tinahely, Rathnew, and Rathdrum. Additionally, the Roundwood Ramblers are hosting a special walk in Glendalough on Wednesday, September 25th. These walks are a great way to explore the stunning landscapes of Wicklow while connecting with fellow walkers in your community.

St. Mary’s and St. Michael’s Church
This captivating loop takes in several significant sites, including the poignant Famine Graveyard and a traditional mass path that echoes the area’s past. We’ll also walk through the Millenium Forest, a lush and tranquil spot that celebrates the renewal of our natural heritage. The route then winds its way back along the serene banks of the Avonmore River, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.

This guided walk is perfect for all ages and fitness levels, offering a chance to explore the peaceful woodland trails at a relaxed pace starting point The Lord’s Wood Car Park.

Tinahely GAA Club
Start Point: GAA carpark at School Road (Meet at 9.45am, walk will start at 10am sharp)
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 12.1km
Estimated time: 3hrs 30mins
Total height climbed: 330m
Highest point: 390m
Terrain underfoot: Forest trail, mountain trails and country lanes.
Suitable for: Reasonably fit walkers. Should be manageable by intermediate walkers who have experience of hill climb and decent.
Notes: Parts of the route are on exposed mountain; full mountain equipment required. Walking boots, warm clothing and wet gear might be required, and poles/sticks recommended. Bringing a snack and drink is suggested. This walk climbs fairly steeply over Garryhoe Hill, crosses open ground and descends to Mangan’s Lane. Good views of the surrounding countryside and Mountains and of Tinahely, especially from the higher slopes.

Centra Rathnew
Join us on Sunday, 29th September at 10am for a relaxed and friendly “Walk n’ Talk” event to celebrate National Walking Day. Whether you’re new to walking or just looking to enjoy a leisurely stroll, this event is perfect for beginners.
We’ll meet at Centra Rathnew and embark on a scenic walk along the Port Road, taking in the beautiful sea views as we head into Wicklow. After a refreshing walk by the sea, we’ll make our way back to Rathnew.
This is a great opportunity to get moving, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with others in the community. Everyone is welcome, so bring a friend or meet new ones along the way!
