Meet Yvonne Doyle, a former Irish tennis pro whose passion for the game has evolved into a mission for holistic well-being. From representing Ireland at the Fed Cup to coaching tennis in Wicklow, Yvonne’s journey embodies dedication and versatility. Now, as a yoga and meditation instructor, she champions mindfulness in mental training and teaches athletes how to care for their bodies through yoga.
Looking back on your athletic career, what accomplishment or achievement are you most proud of?
I always felt very proud representing Ireland in tennis and in 2016 I received the Fed Cup commitment award – this is an award, presented by the International Tennis Federation, to players who have shown long-standing dedication to representing their country in the Fed Cup.
How did you transition from being a competitive athlete to life after retirement, and what challenges did you face during this transition?
I missed the thrill of competing at times but I knew I had made the right decision to retire when I did. I started coaching tennis once I retired. And I discovered new interests that kept me chasing dreams and goals. I also became a mom and all these things kept me busy!
Can you share a favourite memory or moment from your time as an athlete that still brings a smile to your face?
The time I won the Irish Open. I had lost in this tournament when I was younger without winning a single game and at the time, the thought of winning this title felt so far out of my reach. But years later I won it and the icing on the cake was that my parents and husband were present to see it. I was always competing alone abroad so this was extra special!
What do you miss most about your time playing?
I miss the drilling on the court, the off-court training, the moments of digging deep in matches and the sense of physical, mental & emotional achievement when I pulled through a tough match/tournament.
How do you stay connected to the sports community or continue to be involved in promoting physical activity and well-being after retirement?
I coach tennis and I teach yoga & meditation to kids, adults and athletes. I’m passionate about promoting the concept of bringing mindfulness into a tennis player’s mental training regime. And I love teaching players how they can use yoga to care for their bodies.
Reflecting on your journey, is there any advice you would give to your younger self?
I’d tell my younger self that it’s ok to admit if you’re struggling and that it’s not a sign of weakness if you ask for help.
If you could play with/against any athlete, past or present, who would it be, why?
He probably doesn’t play tennis but I’d like to meet Lewis Hamilton. He comes across as a very grounded individual and I admire his mental toughness.
